A commercial photographer by trade, Fritz opened Northern Light Studio in Portland, Oregon in 1984. Within just a few years, Northern Light became one of the premier commercial and aerial photography studios in the Northwest. The first Pro Cyc modules were developed by Fritz in 1988 out of a need to create a better “eggshell” cyclorama for his own studio. At that time, the only way to build a cyclorama studio was with wood and drywall. That process was (and still is) extremely time-consuming, messy and the results were very imperfect. To solve this problem, Fritz had molds created and produced the original cove parts out of fiberglass. At the urging of his father, he patented the designs and called it Pro Cyc, derived from “professional cyclorama”. A few short years later, some colleagues in the technology industry suggested that his cycloramas would be perfect for the budding virtual reality / chroma key (e.g. green screen) industry. They were right, as that industry currently makes up a majority of Pro Cyc’s clientele. Since that time, Fritz continues to improve and design new systems to meet the needs of the photography and video industries, and he continues to follow his father’s advice, patenting each new design along the way.
